Art & Design, Music and Design Technology are taught as individual subjects at Riverside School but also as part of all areas of learning. As part of the PE curriculum, dance is also taught throughout the school.
Art & Design
All classes complete an Art & Design unit of work each term. This involves all types of art techniques using a wide range of materials, approaches and stimuli.
Displays around the school and in classrooms are of a very high standard and regularly changed to reflect the work being studied in other areas of the curriculum as well as showcasing our art work. This shows our pupils, parents and visitors how much we value our pupils’ art work and makes the school an inviting, stimulating environment.
We have links with local art galleries (e.g. we are Tate members) and pupils often go and visit. We know we are very lucky to live and work in an area that has a wealth of resources – and we plan to use them all!
We have been working with the Royal Opera House and the English National Ballet for many years, including the Chance to Dance project.
In the past we have hosted the assessment days at Riverside and some of our pupils have been specially chosen to work with the English National Ballet. One of our pupils has actually performed on stage at the Royal Opera House.
We are lucky to have a specialist Music teacher who works with every class each week. Children have the opportunity to learn to play musical instruments, compose their own music as well as sing.
Regular “performances” take place at Riverside – concerts and plays at Christmas, end of term shows and weekly singing assemblies. We have been awarded a gold medal for our involvement in a nationwide “Sing Up” project.
Riverside choirs have performed in many places, including the Southwark Council building in Tooley Street and even the nearby tube station! If you like singing, just let us know – there are lunchtime and after school choirs too!
We have a music room in school and we all look forward to working there. You can find the music teacher there and all the instruments are ready and waiting!
